Cliff Ansel, BASc. MBA

President and CEO / Director

As the co-founder and President of Thornhill Research, Mr. Ansel led the spinoff of multiple technologies from University Health Network and the successful commercialization of several medical devices including the first portable ICU, the first portable treatment for carbon monoxide poisoning, and an innovative surgical lighting system for field hospitals. Prior to Thornhill Research, Mr. Ansel was an equity research analyst on Bay Street, and worked in management consulting for a leading mid-market consulting firm.

Joseph A. Fisher, MD, FRCP(C)

Chief Scientist / Director

Dr. Fisher is a co-founder of Thornhill Research and Professor in the faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto. He is currently a Staff Anaesthetist at the University Health Network and Senior Scientist, Human Physiology & Clinical Investigation, at Toronto General Research Institute. He has published over 120 papers in peer-reviewed journals, and designed and consulted on products for NASA, Government of Canada, United States Marine Corps, and various companies. He is an inventor on over 25 issued and pending patents, including the core technology behind Thornhill’s technologies. Ron Baker, B.Sc., MBA

CFO / COO

Mr. Baker has over 30 years of executive-level management and management consulting experience. He is a start-up and intervention expert, with extensive experience with biotechnology and information technology companies.

Kieran Murphy, MD

Director

Dr. Murphy is currently the Vice Chair and Chief of Medical Imaging at the University of Toronto and University Health Network. He recently left Johns Hopkins Hospital where he was Director of Interventional Neuroradiology. He is the author of over 100 papers, 12 computer programs, and several book chapters. Dr. Murphy holds over 40 patents and has been involved in four medical device startups.

Ludwik Fedorko, MD, PhD, FRCP(C)

Senior Scientist / Director

Dr. Fedorko holds a specialty certificate in Anaesthesiology from The Royal College of Physicians (Canada). After working as Staff Scientist at the Hospital for Sick Children Research Institute (Toronto) and The Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute of Mt. Sinai Hospital (Toronto) he joined the Department of Anaesthesia at The Toronto General Hospital. His clinical practice expertise is in the area of cardiovascular anaesthesiology, heart and lung transplantation and cardiovascular intensive care. Dr. Fedorko is the author of numerous publications.

 

ADVISORY BOARD

Morry Blumenfeld, PhD

Dr. Blumenfeld is a founder of Meditech Advisors (Meditech I) and Chief Investment Officer in ZMEP I, LP(Meditech II). Dr. Blumenfeld retired from GE Healthcare in 2002 after a 34 year career with GE. He was one of the managers responsible for the initial development of GE’s computed tomography (“CT”) and magnetic resonance imaging (“MRI”) product lines.

David Mikulis, MD, FRCR

Dr. Mikulis is Full Professor and Co-Director of Medical Imaging Research in the Dept. of Medical Imaging at the University of Toronto and the University Health Network. He is also Director of the Radiology Residency Research Program, and Director of the Functional Imaging Research Lab. Dr. Mikulis is one of the founding members of the American Society of Functional Neuroradiology (ASFNR), and currently serves on the ASFNR Executive Committee.

Seemant Chaturvedi, MD, FAHA, FAAN

Dr. Chaturvedi is Professor of Neurology at Wayne State University School of Medicine and Director of the Wayne State/Detroit Medical Center Comprehensive Stroke Program. He has co-edited the books Transient Ischemic Attacks in 2004 and Carotid Artery Stenosis: Current and Emerging Treatments in 2005. He was chairman of the American Academy of Neurology carotid endarterectomy guidelines committee, with the guidelines published in 2005. He is currently on the steering committee of several stroke prevention studies. 

Colin Derdeyn, MD

Dr. Derdeyn is professor of Radiology, Neurology and Neurological Surgery at Washington University and Director of the Washington University/Barnes Jewish Hospital Stroke and Cerebrovascular Center. He is a Principal Investigator for the SAMMPRIS trial, an ongoing randomized trial of angioplasty and stenting for intracranial atherosclerotic disease. He directs the Washington University SPOTRIAS (Specialized Program for Translational Research in Acute Stroke) Center. Dr. Derdeyn also chairs the Data and Safety Monitoring Boards for two ongoing NIH funded acute stroke clinical trials (MR Rescue and ICTus 2/3).

Cathy Steiner, MSc., MBA, CA

Ms. Steiner is Managing Director of Nucleus GC, a professional services firm focused on life sciences companies. She has over 20 years of experience providing capital markets and strategic advisory to life sciences companies, and was previously head of Canadian Healthcare Investment Banking for CIBC World Markets.
